I should name it as ‘How to paint an attractive asian female in less than 4 hours’ but it sounds lame. So here we go… making of Natsu.
Digital painting is always fun because you don’t know how things would turn out. If you’ve some experience, chances you are already developed you own painting pipeline or working style. So first of all, I’m addressing this material to the artists looking for the fresh input and some creative thoughts.
Each painting starting with an idea or feeling. I worked on the barbarian image (that Diablo III guy) and stumbled onto the drawing from deviantart (usually I turn my network connection off while working). It was half-nude girl painted by French artist ~darax.
I liked the idea and decided to sketch quickly my approach. The results were quite surprising even for myself so I skip the barbarian aside and switched to the sketch. The next 2 or 3 hours were a total blast with me painting like mad.

The final result, as you see above is quite unusual for me. I often tend to polish things up to the very last bit and even higher but this painting is somewhere between finished illustration and etude.
The title says ‘Natsu’ which means summer in Japanese (the kanji is 夏). I think it suits the image quite well.

Concept Art World is a wordpress-based blog about, well you name it, conceptual art. There are posts about videogames and movies concept art and artists as well as various artistic projects like Exodyssey or BATTLEMiLK. The structure is simple and neat so you won’t be lost under the piles of text. There are also few small sections with information on books, training and studios. Here is an example on Star Trek 2009 concept art feature:

Another cool blog I’ve just discovered Eavesdropping with Johnny have tons of info on Star Trek, including photos and concepts from the recent Star Trek 2009 movie. If you’re sci-fi fan or futuristic designer don’t miss this one.

Whoa! Finally we’ve got a little glimpse on James Cameron’s epic. Over 1,000 European Industry attendees at CinemaExpo International in Amsterdam were able to experience 24 minutes of footage from Avatar. There are lots of hype around this movie but yet nobody have seen anything except few production shots and concept arts. So after the screening in Amsterdam that image were cycling around the globe:

Beautiful night shot from Pandora with Na’vi spices. Somebody says it’s just another concept art but looks like it’s not. After all the expectations for Avatar are super high and by reading the feedback from screening it goes even higher.
Another thing that attracted my attention was the trailer for The Last Airbender. I have absolutely no idea about that world and Avatar animation series so the movie footage were quite refreshing.

Ballistic Publishing just launched a brand new, large-format, fantasy graphic novel based on the Utherworlds universe created by Philip Straub. Hey guys, here are some concept art by James Clyne he did for Star Trek 2009 movie:

Make sure to visit his website www.jamesclyne.com for more cool stuff from film projects.
You can also check another gallery on evolution of space cruiser design. There are more than 150 photos and renders of various space ships from 1950’s up to modern space hot rods:

Actually there are many ways how you can sketch digitally and I’m still discovering new methods and tools.
For the sketching the ideal tool is your good old wooden or brand new mechanical pencils. They are fast, flexible, light and so on. Oh and you have a very precise control over your tools behavior. That’s the most important thing actually! Digital tools are fun but sometimes unpedictable or hard to control. The only problem with analog pencils is when you scan them into computer and your lines looks messy. Sometimes it’s not a problem if you need only guidelines for the painting (you’ll cover them with paint after all) but for the comic or manga style you need sharp and crisp lines.

Wow… E3 is blowing up with tons of cool stuff. Here are the things that impress me the most (in terms of visual design, look and feel) in no particular order:
The Last Guardian
Originally known as Project Trico – a new game by Fumito Ueda and Team ICO (creators of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus) rising the bar for storytelling and visuals even higher. The design is unique and fits the setting thus creating an exotic, tribal atmosphere. The griffin-like creature is amazingly animated and looks totally alive. Don’t forget about the emotional relation shown between characters in the debut trailer.

Since discovering Hyung-Tae Kim works in 2002 or so I’ve been fascinated by korean artists. These guys (and girls!) got a crazy imagination, bold skills and tremendous endurance. Most of them are working in the game industry, producing concept art, 3d assets and promotional illustrations for various korean MMORPG. Because of the government support, 100% of the korean games are MMO.
The good example of successful visual design is Lineage II. Those dark elfs are probably the most effective and attractive creations (taking into account polycout and texture limitations). But the upcoming next-gen MMO’s would be better! Besides the others, Aion is the most anticipated game got a great visuals and stunning artwork. Aion posters and illustrations are just wonderful and I finally discovered the guy behind some of them.
Ryu-Hun Yong is a korean artist, conceptual designer and illustrator. He specialized in character concepts, costume design, illustration and so on. Armed with Photoshop, Painter, Illustrator and 3d studio max he creates stunning posters, interesting characters and even graphic novels. Basically I discovered him by searching for the guy behind Fox Spirit manhwa, published in Apple vol.2 artbook.

He’s amazing artist and his website truly reflects that. The only problem is that it’s not user-friendly webpage. The blog is skewed in Firefox (all I see is a tiny stripe) and you can’t save images in just one click. Honestly I don’t know why artists doing such things.

I have absolutely no idea if anyone is ever reading this… so chances are it’s totally useless to post anything here but I’ll keep experimenting for a while until completely abandon that blog.
I’ve many paintings in my work in progress folder and here is a recent one. Princess Ameli from King’s Bounty videogame. Before you proceed keep in mind that it’s a w.i.p. and beware of the nudity (NSFW).
